New York Bill Would Classify SSVs, UTVs for ATV Licenses
New York’s state Senate is considering a bill to increase the maximum weight of ATVs so residents can legally register and ride SSVs on state trail systems.
The bill, sponsored by Sen. Darrel J. Aubertine, would increase the defined weight of an ATV from 1,000 to 1,500 pounds so SSVs and UTVs could be registered.
Michael G. Bellinger, president of the New York Trail Riders Organization of Northern New York, Lorraine, told the Watertown Daily Times the state could generate “several million dollars” through registration fees if the law is passed.
“There’s a lot of people who bought them and run them on their property, but they’d like to put them on the trails,” he says.
Some groups may oppose the change, fearing that the heavier, wider vehicles will destroy trails designed for smaller ones, but trail support groups could make sure that does not happen.
