Round 9~Muley Run 2013 – Panaca, NV

Panaca Race CourseThis weekend, Round 9 of the FMF/GPR AMA National Hare & Hound Championship Series takes place in eastern Nevada and is hosted by the Silver State Trailblazers.  This is the second running of the MULEY RUN in Panaca, NV, and has quickly become a favorite among the racers!

The 100-mile point-to-point event will start at the local fairgrounds in Panaca with the racers finishing in Caliente.  The host club has a lot of festivities planned for this weekend, starting on Friday evening.  This event is very unique in that not only will you receive your National points, but you can receive either D37 or MRAN points as well.  (Info and flyers are attached below…)

The AMA Youth National Series will take place on Saturday morning starting at 7:00am with a 12-mile loop for the minis and a 1-mile loop for the pee wees. (More info below…)

This year has been intense with all the points battles taking place in many various classes.  In the Pro standings, FMF/KTM’s Kurt Caselli is in the lead by 30 points over Off-Road Support’s Jacob Argubright.  Caselli has many wins under his belt but also had to take a DNF at Round 1.  Argubright has also been on the podium several times this year and had a 1st Place finish at Round 8.  Argubright has been participating in some Endurocross events as well as XGames this year.  With only two rounds to go in the series, it will come down to the wire to see who will be crowned the 2013 Champ!  As Caselli heads off to the Baja 1000 later this year and then onto the 2014 Dakar Rally and Rally Series, his plate is completely full with many amazing Off-Road experiences ahead.  We want to wish him the best of luck and want to thank him for participating in the NHHA series for the last 3 years!

Purvines Racing’s, Nick Burson, currently sits 19 points behind Argubright heading into Round 9.  Burson has visited the podium several times this season with some 3rd place finishes and has been trying his hardest to get a win.  No doubt it will be coming soon!  He and teammate, Justin Morrow, also just won the BITD Vegas to Reno race which took place last weekend and was over 550 miles long.  The Beta’s are proving to be a very competitive bike for sure. Congrats to Purvines Racing!

FMF/KTM’s Ivan Ramirez has been in training to win all year in this series.  Ramirez has proved he will be a top dog for sure in 2014 among the other Pro racers and will be on the hunt for a Championship.  He’s had two 2nd place finishes and a 3rd and is currently 53 points behind Burson.  He’s hitting the mark for his first year racing this series and will be back in 2014!

Panaca Race CourseOpen A rider from Nevada, Irving Powers, currently sits in the 5th Overall spot and is leading his class by 27 points.  Powers has been battling all year with Western Designs racer, Tuffy Pearson.  Both Powers and Pearson have won races in their class and are currently 27 points apart.  Best of luck to both of these riders for the Championship!

Some great battles in many classes will come down to these final two rounds.  In the 250A class, Levi Hutchings and Nic Garvin are only separated by 9 points heading into Round 9. 2012 Vet A Champ, Purvines Racing’s Dan Capparelli, has a large points lead over Santa Barbara’s, Ken Strebel.  Capparelli has 53 points over Strebel and hopes to make it a 3-peat for his back-to-back-to-back Championships.  Strebel has definitely shown his skills in his first year as a Vet Expert.  The 200A Class Champion has already been crowned.  Congrats to Blais Racing’s Ben Meza on an excellent year!  Meza will be moving up to the 250A class for 2014.

In the Senior 40A Class, Montana’s Mark Weirich appears to have his Championship wrapped up with 69 points ahead of 2nd place contender and long-time Vet legend, Paul Krause.  Both riders have finished atop the podium a few times this season while Krause has had to miss a round and DNF twice.

In the Super Senior 50A Class, D37’s John Kearney leads the way with 36 points over second place from Nevada, William Ohara.  Another fast D37 racer, Larry Kleinschmidt, has his Championship wrapped up in the Masters 60+ class.  Congrats Larry!  The ladies battle it out for the top spot this year as Western Designs Maggie Pearson and Vurboffroad’s Megan Blackburn have had some excellent finishes.  Pearson has five wins on her TM bike while Blackburn has one win on her Kawasaki.  The ladies are separated by 21 points heading into Round 9.

A very close battle has heated up between 2012 ATV A Champ, Andy Lagzdins, and Fasst Co’s Colt Brinkerhoff.  Each racer has had two wins this season and are only separated by 14 points.  With Brinkerhoff’s MX background and being new this desert series for 2013, he has proven he can run with the best and it will come down to the wire at these last two rounds to see who will come out on top!
