I brought our 2010 Polaris RZR S for the first snow trip of the season

What a great day up in the Sierra Nevada’s. It was a last minute decision for me to tag along with my friends Dave (with a 2009 Polaris RZR S) and Mike (with his 2008 Kawasaki Teryx).  And it was an even later decision for my son to come with me.

We hit the exit off of Highway 50, and immediately saw some snow and ice.  It didn’t look too good for us, but we decided to unload our UTVs where we were and and least give it a try.  Boy was that a great decision!

The start of the trail was about 6,000 feet and as we headed up and the snow got deeper. We met up with a few Jeeps that were doing the same thing, just at a slower pace.  They let us by and now there weren’t as many tracks in front of us making the going harder.

There was fresh powder everywhere, but as long as the snow wasn’t so deep that your skid was riding on powder, we could keep going.

There was one rock section that was a bit of a challenge with the slippery rocks. This section is tough enough with dry rocks, so we tried a few times to climb them unassisted. The snow made the rocks too slippery, and we slid off the rocks real quick. I was glad that I had installed a Polaris Rock Sliders and Factory UTV UHMW skid plate and a-arm guards.  Although the tough section was short, it was nice to not have to worry about bashing up the skid plate when slipping off a rock. We pushed Mike and Dave’s UTVs up and over, then pulled my RZR S up with a tow strap.

We finally reach a point at an elevation over 7,000 feet where the tracks ended and the powder was about 12-18 inches deep.  That was the end of the trail for us.  The Teryx and RZRs just couldn’t make it through that much deep powder going up hill.

I was really glad that my son made the last minute decision to come with me.  He had a great time playing in the snow, and he really liked rocking out to his iPod in the SSV Works audio system.

I would like to try some tracks out on a UTV sometime this winter.  If you could stay up on top of the snow, I think you would be unstoppable.

We’d like to feature more snow trips this winter so if you are headed out in the snow or ice for a trip, take along your camera and video recorder! Please email submit@utvweekly.com with your pictures and all about your adventure.
