The inaugural Whiplash race at Speedworld took place on Saturday and Sunday December 5th and 6th, 2009. Whiplash stretched the race into two days which was combined for an overall win. Racers needed to be on top of their game both days in order to walk away with the win.
Action started Saturday morning with a icy morning with temps in the mid twenties, made for a wild ride for the races as they were sliding all over the course desperately trying to get traction. Trophy Karts would be the first group racing and the only group doing a point’s race for just Saturday (due to the mom’s trophy kart race Sunday). The Trophy Kart classes consisted of 21 Karts which made for an exciting race, when the dust settled; Kol Bailey took the win in the Mini Trophy Kart Class with William “Tyler” Aelvar taking second and Courtney Hukill clinching third. In the PW Trophy Karts, Jeff Hoffman took first with Parker Steele less than fifteen seconds behind him for second and Resse Bailey on his tail for third.
Then The UTV’s dominated the track with 30 plus entries in the class which made for some exciting, door to door, action. After a hard fought battle, Tyler Herzog would win the racing weekend, with Eric Bartlett taking second and Robert Vanbeekum battling for third.
In The Buggy class Todd Martenson (Scott’s brother) would sweep the competition for the overall and class 10. This would be his first race and third time behind the wheel of the Martenson class 10 buggy. Levi Rockhill would battle back and forth with Martenson with Rockhill clinching first place overall and first in class 1. Martenson came in second and Jeff Martin would take third overall and second in class 10.
In the Truck class, there was a light turn out due to the Henderson race the same weekend, and the Snore Laughlin race; However there was a lot of action during the race, Scott Martenson in a Pro2 was dominating the course, putting down lap times that would qualify for a top 5 spot in the Lucas Series, and that was only his second time in the truck. Scott Martenson would take first place in the Truck class with Scott McCracken taking second place overall and first in class 8, and Shawn Askamit taking third overall and 1st in 1450.
On Sunday the First ever mom’s Trophy Kart race where the kids mom’s raced their Trophy Karts and it proved be very interesting and intense as there was some tight racing and lots of carnage as half the Trophy Karts left the track at the end of the race with broken fiberglass or bent bumpers it was a great race. That concludes the Whiplash Speedworld race, Whiplash plans on running a short course series and a desert series in 2010.
