Biltek Silver State 300 BITD Race
Held in Alamo, NV, about 95 miles north of Las Vegas, the Biltek Silver State 300 provided a very challenging race for this Best In the Desert race. Nestled in this tiny town on Hwy 93, scores of racers gathered to compete in this 300 mile event. The motorcycles, quads and UTV’s lined up at the start line at 5:30am for staging.
The Aliante Casino & Resort was host to this race and was home to tech and inspection on Friday morning before the race. The weather the week before gave for some interesting situations in “desert” racing, with the biggest challenge for most being the snow. Luckily, mother-nature was kind and all of the snow melted before race day and made for a great day of racing.
The Pro UTV class held a total of ten UTV’s, while the Sportsman class held only two. The Pro UTV’s started the race ahead of the Sportsman class, but it didn’t take long before that order would change. Taking an early lead in the entire UTV class was #1954, Sportsman Racer, Joseph Leeper from Las Vegas, NV in his Yamaha Rhino. He continued his domination in the race by staying a good 20-25 miles ahead of the competition for almost the entire race. The Pro class first place finisher, # 1917, Jason Murray, finished the race behind Leeper for a second place overall finish, but first in his class.
The race wound through some of the most beautiful desert Nevada has to offer. However beautiful it may be, it did give for some hairy situations and several DNF’s. Several vehicles exited the race early, one in particular, #1919, Brandon Schueler, whose car caught fire and burned to the ground between pit’s 4 and 5. Jagged X owner, Bill Schueler, gave kudos to the BITD on their timely response to the emergency.
Congratulations go out to the six UTV’s that finished this grueling race and best of luck next time in the next Best in the Desert Bluewater Gran Prix Race set to be held in Parker, AZ in May 2010.
