Sierra Trek Returns To Its Roots, Adds Runs

| July 27, 2011

Sierra Trek is back at Meadow Lake on August 11-14, 2011, and we’re working to make the event even more fun for 2011. We listened to suggestions and requests as we put this event together, and many folks from the south and central districts have asked for additional runs at Trek to offer an even bigger pay-off than usual after that long. You can still run the Fordyce Trail and enjoy Sierra Trek’s version of Summit City, but this year, you’ll find even more options from which to choose.

We’re adding a new run for ATVs and UTVs – you can register it like any other Saturday run. This inaugural Sierra Trek ATV/UTV run is chaired by Keith Stevens and staffed by other members of the Cal Sierra ATV club. This run will follow roads and trails in the Meadow Lake area and will be four to five hours long, staging from the Meadow Lake ‘Y’ intersection at 8am on Saturday. We’re offering a special discounted base rate of $140 for the run on Sat or if folks are already registered for other Trek runs, the standard $50 add-on fee applies. This run offers history, scenery, and ATV/UTV fun… come check it out!

We’re also tweaking a few old runs:

  • Star Trek is morphing into Rock’n Into The Night. Run the Fordyce Trail from Cisco Grove to Meadow Lake under the stars. With less spotting and lower visibility, we recommend that drivers have run this trail at least once previously, and vehicles must have a locking differential and minimum of 33-inch tires. This trail stages at Cisco Grove on 6 PM Friday, and follows Rattlesnake Road to Fordyce Lake, and then dives down across Fordyce Creek. From there, the trail run heads up Winch Hill 3, 4 and 5, with food and entertainment atop Winch Hill 5.
  • The Thursday SUV Run is doubling itself and starting Wednesday, with an overnight thrown in, and Sierra Trek is offering a new two-day overnight run to the Lake Tahoe area on the Wednesday and Thursday leading up to Trek. The run will be led by Jim Bramham, will stage in Truckee, and will finish in camp at Meadow Lake. It will feature fantastic views of the High Sierra, Lake Tahoe, and the Rubicon River Valley. The participants will enjoy great food, historic narrations, and great camaraderie along the trail and around the campfire. This run is designed for SUVs but heartier rigs are also welcome. You can sign up for this event and also participate in the Friday short wheel base run, Rock’n Into The Night (night run), or the Saturday River Run, all on the famous Fordyce Trail. There will also be a more traditional Saturday-only SUV run, and both runs have a 25-vehicle limit.

Make your plans now to attend Sierra Trek 2011 – whether to run these new runs, to run the classic old runs, or both, you’re bound to have a blast.

As we did in 2010, Saturday we’ll be focusing on getting everyone in camp to play for the afternoon – last year’s canoe races, marsh-mallow driving contest, kids-raffle, horse shoes, and cards tournament were a hit, and we’re working on adding even more fun to the mix. Saturday lunch will be back, as well, so come hungry, and plan to stay in main camp, enjoying the fun, right up until Saturday’s big dinner!

The core rates are remaining the same, but there is a $10/per person early registration discount for registrations received before June and a $10/per person late registration fee for registrations received after June, along with a Chairman’s Raffle to encourage early registration. Each person who registers before June will be entered into the Chairman’s Raffle that will be contained in a black box too heavy to lift. That box will contain a winch equipped with new winch rope, and other items of use on the trail. The chairman hasn’t decided what all will go in that box yet, but he’s working with local vendors, accepting suggestions, and soliciting donations. We have a toilet paper and baked beans sponsor (oddly the same fella), but beverages, snacks, and tools are still TBD… just be assured that there will be an 8K electric winch at the bottom of it all – and register early and often!
