Bell and Cunningham Score Consecutive 1-2 Podium Finishes; Holbrook Earns Top Five at St. Petersburg.
ST. PETERSBURG, FL (March 23, 2012) — The 2012 Pirelli World Challenge Championships opened with a Saturday night street fight at the Acura Sports Car Challenge of St. Petersburg presented by Pirelli, and in the end it was Eibach Springs equipped machines that claimed the top two spots on the GTS podium. Justin Bell hit the racing equivalent of a home run in his maiden World Challenge appearance, taking advantage of a restart to find his way around early GTS leader Peter Cunningham. He then held off a late charge from Cunningham and was decidedly pleased to see the final full-course caution period come out, which preserve his victory. Cunningham, of Milwaukee, Wis., ended up second in the Eibach Springs equipped No. 42 RealTime/Acura/HPD Acura TSX. He also turned in the fastest GTS lap in the race at 1:21.777 (79.239 mph), which put him on pole for Sunday’s second race of the Acura Sports Car Challenge doubleheader. Cunningham, a nine-time SCCA Pro Racing Champion, lead a substantial portion of the race and looked to be the one to beat as Bell dropped from second on the starting grid to third in the early going of the 29-lap GTS race.
However, just as it went down in Race 1, Bell put together a solid second half charge in the No. 50 eBay Motors Ford Mustang Boss 302S to move into the runner-up position and immediately set sail after Cunningham. Bell eventually chased Cunningham down and took the lead in Turn 1 with just two laps remaining, which earned him both the Cadillac CTS-V Move of the Race Award and the Kia Turning Point of the Race. He went on to maintain his perfect record in World Challenge competition, going two-for-two as a stand-in for 2011 GTS champion Paul Brown. Bell leads Cunningham by 35 points, 302-267, in the GTS driver standings with two of 12 class races completed. Cunningham, a nine-time SCCA Pro Racing champion, took his second straight runner-up result on Sunday.
In the SCCA Pro Racing Pirelli World Challenge season opener, Shea Holbrook set her Eibach Springs adorned TrueCar No. 67 Honda Civic Si racecar a top of the Touring Car practice leader board early in the weekend, and later qualified in the seventh starting spot for race one of the doubleheader. As soon as the field took the green from the standing start, Holbrook began to slice her way through the field to secure her first top five finish of the season. In the final race of the weekend, Holbrook was in the position to secure another solid finish until contact with a GTS Class car on lap eleven damaged the rear suspension on the No. 67 that proved to be too severe to allow her to continue.

After starting from the sixth position, Moyer Jr. charged to second by lap five. Moyer Jr. settled for the runner-up finish.

Solberg and Patterson Grab Fafe Glory in Perfect Portuguese Warm-up FAFE, PORTUGAL (March 24, 2012) – Ford World Rally Team’s Petter Solberg and Chris Patterson chalked up their first victory for the squad with a stunning performance to triumph in the Fafe Rally Sprint, a warm-up event for the Rally de Portugal. Solberg’s Ford Fiesta RS World Rally Car edged out world champion Sébastien Loeb by just two hundredths of a second. Although a non-championship event, the Fafe Rally Sprint attracted 30 entries, among them the Fiesta RS World Rally Cars of Solberg and team-mates Jari-Matti Latvala / Miikka Anttila. Although Latvala proved comfortably fastest on the first of three runs through the demanding stage, Solberg’s second pass was swifter still, earning the popular Norwegian the right to drive the team’s sole Fiesta RS WRC on the third and final test.

Sanders Survives for Runner-up Finish at I-35 Speedway WINSTON, MO (March 25, 2012) — On a warm Sunday evening at the I-35 Speedway, Rodney Sanders continued his streak of top five finishes at the 4th Annual Yancy’s Automotive Missouri Meltdown at the 3/8-mile clay oval in Winston, Missouri, extending his lead in the USMTS Casey’s Cup Series points standings. The first caution of the 30-lap feature event appeared as the green flag was unfurled after the polesitter smacked the concrete front stretch wall, putting his machine on its roof and taking out the Eibach Springs Heat Race winner Johnny Scott in the process. Racing around the top side of the track, Eibach Springs supporter Colt Mather came from the fifth starting spot to take the lead away on lap 5, but eventual winner Ron Ver Beek roared back to the front two laps later using the low side of the racing surface. A series of cautions allowed the Eibach Springs equipped machines of Sanders, Zack Vanderbeek, and John Allen to race their way into the top five after starting tenth, thirteenth, and fourteenth, respectively.

Roczen Finishes Second; Musquin Strong Sixth in Toronto TORONTO, CANADA (March 25, 2012) – Kenny Roczen overcame the flu and a rough start to his day at the Toronto, Canada SX Lites East round to finish on the podium in second place while Red Bull KTM Factory teammate Marvin Musquin battled his way to sixth in the SX at the Rogers Stadium. After taking it easy in practice to conserve energy, Roczen battled through his sickness to finish inside the top three for the six-lap race and easily transfer to the main event. In the main event, Roczen charged past leader Justin Barcia in the first rhythm section to lead the first lap. He managed to stay in front for a few more circuits before losing the lead to Barcia after a slight bobble coming out of a corner. The Red Bull KTM Factory rider settled into second place to claim his podium position.
The Red Bull KTM Factory Team celebrated another great finish by stand-in rider Marvin Musquin in the KTM 350 SX-F. The double MX2 World Champion secured sixth position in his heat to qualify to the main event. He was in the middle of the pack at the start of the main and quickly slipped past a few riders to secure sixth at the conclusion of the opening lap before falling back to ninth at the half way mark. Musquin worked his way back through the field in the final part of the race, slipping past Kyle Chisholm for sixth place as they dashed for the checkered flag.
