Hard Work Pans Out For Freitas Motorsports At The BITD Silver State 300
Las Vegas, NV – You would not think that patience and racing go together well but sometimes that’s the case. Freitas Motorsports would have to overcome a huge deficit at the Best in the Desert, Silver State 300 off-road race when they failed to start their qualifying lap due to a torque converter seal failure while waiting in line; putting them in the 41st starting position on race day.
The team had already spent most of the night in Kevin Kroyer’s shop fixing a broken a-arm and replacing shocks that were damaged in a pre-race testing crash. Like many racers who have to make sacrifices of time and money to follow their dreams, driver Garrick Freitas was busy working and could not make the test session putting a substitute driver behind the wheel. No knock on the fill in driver but he just didn’t have the same time behind the wheel of the Jimco race car that Garrick has. Pavement racers have to deal with left-right and speed up, slow down. Off-road racers have all that plus up and down, back and forth and side to side. Off-road racing is a whole different challenge that requires quick decisions and fast reflexes; it’s easy to get “behind in the steering.”
Despite the setbacks leading up to the event the team pulled together and had the car ready to go on race day. The Silver State course is rough but mostly flat. The hard packed roads are covered in rocks that act like ball bearings making it easy to go off course. It’s narrow and dusty which makes it hard to pass. The course lends itself to long stretches of wide open running that can cause a driver to lose concentration, that’s when things can go wrong.
“When the course is rough and technical you can make time on people,” says Garrick, “When the course is fast, it’s fast for everyone. That makes it tough to get around the car in front. We battled with Ray Griffith in his Jimco all day and beat him by only a couple of seconds at the finish. I was patient and made passes when they were available. I hit a huge window of clean air from mile 125 to 200 where I was able to go all out. We started 41st and finished 10th in class, 20th overall. I owe Kevin Kroyer huge thanks for helping us when we needed to get the car race ready. I’m really proud of our team; they come through for me every time.”
So far the 2012 race season has been hard fought for Freitas Motorsports but the team has overcome every challenge with flying colors and the results of all the hard work are a solid sixth place in the season long points championship.
The Freitas Off Road Motorsports team will be headed next to “The Longest Off-Road Race In The United States”, the TSCO Vegas To Reno, being held August 16th-18th. For more details see www.bitd.com
