THR Motorsports – Best In The Desert Silver State 300 Race Report
Las Vegas, NV – The THR Motorsports team was out in full force at the Best in the Desert, Silver State 300 off-road race with three Monster Energy Kawasaki’s, the General Tire unlimited class 1500 car of Mikey Childress and Rick Johnson’s General Tire Trick Truck.
Steve Hengeveld would solo the N1 Monster Energy Kawasaki as Robby Bell was busy riding the big 6 event in Primm and David Pearson was in Utah for the National Hare & Hound. Steve got out front early but tagged a hidden rock forcing him to stop at pit 6 to change the wheel. The down time allowed the N27 Monster Energy Kawasaki ridden by THR teammates Ty Renshaw and Ricky Brabec to take the lead. Steve stayed in touch with the leaders but could not overtake them finishing just a little over one minute behind in second.
Steve did an excellent job maintaining valuable points for the N1 bike with his solo effort. The number one overall finish was the first for Renshaw and Brabec but most predict it won’t be the last. Expectations run high for this talented pair of young riders. Not content with both top spots in Open Pro, THR team owner Scott Jacobson and his son Jason rode to the Open Amateur class win and 14th place overall on their Monster Energy Kawasaki.
Mikey Childress and co-driver Travis Howard had a great qualifying lap taking 5th overall and third in class. The duo was on the move early passing Sam Berri at mile 12 for second place in class behind Robby Gordon. The hard packed portions of the course were covered in loose rocks that made the corners treacherous.
Mikey was getting the General Tire unlimited race car up to top speeds in the long straight sections but had to brake heavy for the corners to avoid going off like many others in the race. The fast pace started to overheat the brakes making the car difficult to drive and causing them to back off a bit to save the car. They made the adjustment and settled into a steady pace which along with the great pit stops by the crew kept them near the front finishing 5th in class and 8th overall.
Rick D. Johnson had a respectable qualifying lap placing him mid pack at number 11 out of 20 Trick Trucks and 21st overall. On the narrow dusty course he would have his work cut out for him trying to move up through the pack. On race day Rick was picking off drivers at a good pace in his General Tire Trick Truck when a slight mechanical issue took five minutes out of his hard-earned gains. He battled on to the finish after repairs without further delay and ended up 8th in class, 15th overall.
The entire THR Motorsports team had a successful weekend competing on a difficult race course. Hats off to the team and the many sponsors who make it all possible.
