BJ Baldwin Heads to San Felipe Lighter, Faster, Stronger
The Mastercraft Safety Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 March 8-10 marks the Start of the 2013 SCORE Desert Series. The race is typically very tough and very fast. This year’s course is a departure from the endless miles of high-speed whoops that racers have come to expect but still has plenty of the rough stuff and more technical sections thrown in to test the drivers. In his defense of the number one plate, BJ Baldwin comes prepared to step it up this season. His Monster Energy, Toyo Tires, SCORE Trophy Truck “Rampage” is even more formidable due to key improvements made before the race.
First off, the suspension has been further refined by the mechanical artisans at ID Designs. Precise shock tuning and the latest damping technology from King Shocks bolster the suspension modifications. “We have the latest technology on BJ’s truck,” said King Shocks tuning expert Gerrardo Iribe, “He has finned reservoirs for cooling and 7 tube, 4.5 inch diameter shocks. We have worked to achieve a 30% improvement in performance with these changes. We are also testing a new shock fluid that further reduces operating temperatures. The shock upgrades we have implemented were responsible for the speed he showed at the Baja 1000. BJ passed Bryce Menzies and Rob MacCachren in the roughest San Felipe section of the course.”
“We had a gap between races so it was the best time to do a major overhaul,” said BJ, “The competition is tough, you can’t afford to stand still. With Rampage we can handle the biggest holes and deepest whoops; no problem. At the 1000, I passed Rob Mac at full speed. He told me he thought we broke because there was no dust from us. The truth is, we were gone! I’m so happy to be back in Baja. I can’t wait for the race.”
In addition to the suspension work Rampage was torn down to the bare frame, all repair work was performed and then a fresh coat of Monster metallic green powder coating was applied.
The electrical system was completely redesigned and re-done saving 35lbs. The whole system contains only 16 switches to operate the Rigid Industries LED Lights, coolers, the ignition, everything. BJ will be third off the line on race morning. With clean air out front and a brutally fast truck, BJ is poised to start the season off with some great results.
