Desert Racers to be included in 2013 Dakar Challenge
Reno, NV
The legendary Dakar Rally is a Rally-Raid endurance event organized by Amaury Sport Organization (A.S.O.) that typically covers over 3000 miles of off road terrain in daily stages for two weeks straight. Originally, the race would begin in Paris, France and make its way across North Africa to Dakar, Senegal. In 2009, the rally moved to South America where it takes place today.
The Dakar Challenge awards top points earners from select rallies around the world with entry into the Dakar Rally. For 2013, two desert races are included to the list of qualifying events. Results from the SCORE Baja 500 and HDRA Reno 500 will determine two racers, one motorcycle/ATV competitor and one 4-wheel vehicle competitor, who will earn entry into the 2014 Dakar Rally by scoring the most points in the two events.
The Dakar Challenge seeks to introduce new talent into the Dakar Rally. In order to be eligible for the Dakar Challenge competitors must: Never have participated in the Dakar Rally, (as a driver or crew member) or finished among the top 10 in an FIM all-terrain rally (motorcycles) and/or never have been in the list of FIA priority drivers (cars/trucks) and/or the Elite A.S.O. lists.
A.S.O. Head of Competitions Department-Sporting Coordinator Xavier Gavory commented, “The Dakar Challenge is a significant link between desert racing around the world and the Dakar Rally. This is a broad initiative to detect emerging virtuosos of the handlebars and steering wheel and allow them the opportunity to quickly expand their racing resumes beyond, in this specific case, the SCORE and HDRA racing series. This cooperative adventure will provide significant exposure for the participants as well as the Dakar, SCORE and HDRA.”
“The Dakar Challenge provides a wonderful new opportunity for talented up-and-coming SCORE and HDRA racers to compete in one of the most popular motorsports events in the world,” said Roger Norman, owner of the SCORE and HDRA racing series, “Whoever qualifies for the Dakar Challenge will go on to test their desert racing skills against the best rally racers in the world.”
