Sheldon Creed Battles Obstacles at Las Vegas Motor Speedway
“The Prodigy” Sheldon Creed and the OCCR (Ortega, Creed, Chiramonte Racing) crew made their way to Las Vegas Motor Speedway in Las Vegas Nevada with the AM Ortega BFGoodrich Pro Lite #74 for Rounds 3&4 of the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series.
Coming straight off of his second place finish in Round 2, Creed had positioned himself well within the top ten in over-all championship points and looked to continue his climb to the top.
After qualifying in the top three, Sheldon Creed found himself sitting in the second row behind former Pro Lite Champion and Action Sports icon; Brian Deegan. When the green flag dropped for Round 3 racing action, Creed quickly got off to a great start and began charging to the front. Through the first corner Creed would follow the former champ and set up his attack for the very next corner. Creed pulled off an impressive veteran move on the former champ and positioned himself at the front of the 27-truck Pro Lite field. Creed would continue to lead the remainder of lap 2 until Deegan would return the favor and pass the #74 of Creed.
As the laps ticked away, Creed was planning his next move and anxiously waiting to capitalize on any mistake that Deegan might make. “The Prodigy” set up a daring pass for the lead in the last corner right before the checkered flag. Creed stole the inside line almost overtaking the first place position but left no room for error. With help from behind, Creed found himself on his side on the main straight away and the #74 quickly went from second to last.
“It was rough out there. I had a great battle going with Deegan and unfortunately when I was making the pass in the last corner (I’m not totally sure what happened behind me) the next thing I know I’m going upside down and there are trucks monster trucking their way around me”, commented Creed.
Determined to redeem himself in Round 4, Creed let everybody know what his intentions were early on in the race. Quickly moving himself through traffic and into second place on lap one, Sheldon Creed was on a mission to finish what he started in Round 3. Creed would chase down the 2012 Pro Lite Champion; Rj Anderson (who was currently running in first) one corner at a time. Shortly into lap 2 the #74 Pro Lite lost all control of its front brakes and the brake pedal went straight to the floorboard, making the truck extremely difficult to maneuver.
Struggling to maintain his position, counting the laps as they ticked by, Creed managed to keep a competitive racing line through the white flag. Unfortunately for the OCCR crew, when the pack came around for what would have been the checkered flag, a caution was thrown at the flag stand due to a crash in the final turn. Once the green flag flew, Sheldon tried to hold his second place position but after battling with his disabled truck through the whole race, it proved to be too much to maintain. In a blink of an eye the #74 whipped around and got swallowed up by the remainder of the field.
Creed quickly recovered from the mishap in turn two and got the AM Ortega BFGoodrich #74 Pro Lite pointed in the right direction and unbelievably was able to salvage an incredible 5th place finish.
“The Prodigy” Sheldon Creed has learned many lessons throughout his shortcourse career, but the lessons of Round 3&4 are ones he will be sure to learn from. Round 5&6 of the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series heads to Lake Elsinore Motorsports Park on May 18th and 19th. Lake Elsinore Motorsports Park is right in Sheldon Creed and OCCR’s back yard, Creed must fight to defend his home turf; making the stakes for a podium finish even higher than ever.
