Survival: The Name of the Game at the HDRA Eldorado 500

Woodward Race Products July 18, 2013.  500 miles of the rockiest Reno Nevada race course was a huge challenge for driver and vehicle alike at the HDRA Eldorado 500.  WRP was well represented in several classes including Justin Davis in the Green Army Trophy Truck, Richard Boyle in Class 1, Harley Letner in Class 10, Lucas Knecht in Class 16, and Donald Harper in Class 5/1600.

Harley Letner set a blistering pace in the #1048 machine during Thursday’s qualifying run grabbing the top spot.  Letner’s qualifying run in the GET Performance machine was 20 seconds quicker than the 2nd place class 10 car.  Justin Davis also had a solid qualifying run, stacking up 3rd in Trophy Truck.  After qualifying and pre-running, racers described the course as extremely rocky and very technical knowing race day would prove to be a battle of survival.

Justin Davis raced hard all day, and despite turning up the heat on the last two laps, Tim Herbst and Larry Roeseler in the #19 had about 90 seconds on the #85 machine at the end of the day. The close finish between the two teams makes the battle for the World Championship very interesting with the HDRA Big Horn 300, and the SCORE Baja 1000 still remaining.  Richard Boyle started 4th in class 1 and ran a solid pace letting attrition work to his advantage throughout the day. Boyle outlasted the competition and took home the Class 1 win in a time of 11:25:51.  Bad luck with a steering rack would upset Harley Letner’s chance at a victory in class 10.

Lucas Knecht started first off the line in Class 16 and he never looked back.  The Lone Kid Racing #1666 had zero problems all day, and finished with a time of 12:04:10.  “We just changed rear tires at our driver change on lap 4, and that was it.  Good prep, and zero flats – It was a great day”  said Lucas Knecht.  Donald Harper had to work a little harder for his victory.  After 2 laps the #569 machine was down 9 minutes on the #555.  Car owner Guy Savedra rallied on the last two laps and took the checkers with 35 minutes in hand.
