WARN RT30 Winch with Multi Mount – Another in the Borneo Series

wARN1Sometimes more is better.  In the case of winches for our Borneo expedition we had a requirement of at least a front winch and a spare winch motor and solenoid.   Even with all of that a forward pointing winch really only helps us go forward.  Our friends at WARN suggested we solve the problem by simply taking a second winch, putting it on their Multi Mount Receiver system and put it on the rear.  Sounded good to us, all we really need to do was add an 2″ receiver at the rear.  Now we have the ability to run with dual winches when needed and take off the rear winch when want to save some weight.

WARN2The WARN RT30 winch has wire rope and a wired remote.  It also has a dash mountable controller.  RT stands for rugged terrain which is why it has 50′ of aircraft grade wire rope.  With wire rope there is less concern when working in difficult environments.  Wire rope is much more resilient in abrasive situations.  The all metal 3-stage planetary gear train is nearly buletproof.  A patent pending braking system prevents your rig from rolling back when you stop the winch.   If you don’t think that is important wait until you get on a ledge and realize you have to stop the winch.  Watching your ride slip away on a cheap non-braking winch is not much fun.  With a completely sealed housing the RT30 is perfect for our needs on the expedition.   We expect a LOT of rain, given it will be monsoon season and with several deep water river crossings and countless mud holes to cross we are certain to be putting the waterproof housing to the test.

With the WARN neoprene winch cover in place we are sure to be working with a clean debris free winch.   Without it we are sure to be dealing with a winch caked full of mud, the RZR is a notorious mud slinger and with the RT30 mounted on the rear it would get the full brunt of the action.
