A Quick Weekend Trip to Moab, Utah

MOAB……what can I say about Moab that will actually describe the experience for those who have not yet had the privilege to visit the off-roading capital of the nation, or even describe it to those who have been there without discounting the magnificence?

For those of you who have been there let me just say this last trip in November was beyond all expectations. Great people, awesome trails and the weather cooperated most of the time. We were only wet for a little while and the hail was only about pea sized. But the trails were so worth it.

It was a quick trip, just a weekend thing; we made it over there on Thursday and only got to ride Friday and Saturday. We tried to convince ourselves we could stay one more day but it wasn’t in the cards for us. However, two days was enough to calm my yearnings for good rocks and great riding.

We had 19 UTVs on the trail

We tackled Behind the Rocks on Friday with 19 vehicles. As soon as we got to the first hill we almost lost about half the group when they wanted to turn back and find another trail but we convinced them the hill was going to be the hardest obstacle all day…yea right!!! (We broke them in the hard way). For those who know Behind the Rocks I’m sure you’re smiling to yourself right about now, for those who don’t, let me let you in on a little secret. There are places on the trail called “Upchuck Hill” and “White Knuckle Hill” that are anything but mild. Everyone made it through the day with only one vehicle breaking an axle on the way out on a bad bump going up a ledge.

After being rained on and pelted with hail we scoured the town for rain gear. When we finally got out to the trail we all looked like bananas but whatever, we weren’t going to get wet again. The trail Saturday is not one of the trails we have listed for Rally on the Rocks so it doesn’t really have a name or any set direction. Locals, Jack Foy, Cory & Michelle Foy, and Gabe Payne, took us for an all day ride north of the river where we got to enjoy more of the awesome scenery, and all kinds of different terrain. The trail had fast road-type trail where you can really put the hammer down and slide around the corners as well as difficult creek beds with drop offs that keep one foot on the gas and one foot on the brake.

Moab UTV RunThe weather seemed to cooperate most of the day, however, as soon as we started back towards the trucks the storm started to roll in. Looking out to the west there was a wall of black clouds raining and snowing on the mountains just a few miles away from us. Our “guides” started going a lot faster; however, we were unsuccessful in our attempts to outrun the storm. It hit us just as we were getting back to the trucks so we loaded our vehicles in driving sleet and snow. But let me say this one more time…. It was so worth it. The trails around Moab offer the best riding I have ever experienced and I can’t wait to get back there to do it all over again.Rain, sleet, snow, hail or beautiful sunshine, I’ll take it. Even two days of riding in Moab is worth the drive.

Our next trip to Moab won’t be until May 12th -15th 2010 when we put on Rally on the Rocks. If you have already been there, join us and get your fix. And if you’ve never experienced the magnificence of Moab let us show you around.

You can join Kyle and Michelle Hill for the Rally on the Rocks, May 12-15th, 2010 in Moab, UT at the Old Spanish Trail Arena. For more information go to www.rallyontherocks.com
