Summer OHV Season Brings Opportunity and Responsibility

Albuquerque, New Mexico – June 16, 2010 -With the approach of the summer season comes prime time for off-highway vehicle (OHV) recreation in New Mexico’s mountains and forests. The New Mexico Off-Highway Vehicle Alliance (www.nmohva.org) urges all people visiting New Mexico’s backcountry, no matter what recreation they pursue, to treat our wonderful land with respect. Be considerate of other users and property owners–we share responsibility to safeguard our treasured resources.
The US Forest Service manages many of the recreational areas of our state; some Ranger Districts have already designated the roads, trails, and areas where motorized travel is permitted. Consult the local Forest Service office to see if motor vehicle use maps are available. Stay on designated routes and be aware of local conditions such as fire hazard alerts.
Motorized recreationists should understand and comply with New Mexico’s regulations for OHV use. Visit the Department of Game and Fish website (www.b4uride.com) for the latest revision of OHV rules. Wear protective gear and ride responsibly, within the limits of yourself, your machine, and your environment. Try to leave the backcountry in better shape than you found it. Pack out everything you bring in–there’s usually other trash you can take with you, too.
