Radar Tires Racing Finishes Ninth in Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Round Three

| May 6, 2013
Radar image 1Radar Tires Racing battled through the highly competitive Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series (LOORRS) ProLite Unlimited class on Saturday afternoon at Las Vegas Motors Speedway.  The team settled on a ninth place finish, but not after rallying from the back of the pack.

Mike Johnson, driver of the No. 31 Bronson Motorsports Toyota Tacoma sponsored by Radar Tires worked his way through the wet qualifying session and posted the 11th fastest time of the 27 entrants.  Immediately following qualifying, Johnson and the Bronson Motorsports / Radar Tires Racing team ensured the truck was prepared for the race.  The team anticipated the weather would change and the five-turn dirt track would dry out for the 12-lap event.

The race began and everything went according to plan until the fourth turn of the first lap.  Johnson’s bad luck reared its ugly head only minutes into the race when a competitor spun in front of him.  Johnson maneuvered his race truck to avoid contact, but the vehicles behind him failed to stop.  As a result, the No. 31 Bronson Motorsports Toyota Tacoma’s bumper was tangled with another competitor and it took valuable race time to get the trucks separated. Once Johnson was free, he re-joined the race and was listed in the last place on scoring sheets.

Radar racing image 2“I was just waiting for the field to get separated enough to get some racing room when someone spun in front of me. I stopped and avoided hitting him but several drivers behind me did not avoid hitting me. By the time we got untangled, the entire field had passed, making a day filled with promise quickly evaporate.”

Despite the bad luck, again, Mike and spotter John Hoffman maintained their composure and went to work over the next 11 laps.  Johnson patiently and strategically passed as many competitors as possible during the short event.

By the 12th and final lap, Johnson reached a race-high of ninth place.  The team credited its good fortune and top-10 finish to strong forward traction since Johnson was able to accelerate out of the corners as well as anyone.

“I am getting lots of practice passing folks!” Mike Johnson cleverly stated following the race. “Even with that lap one incident, we were strong today.  My Radar Tires provided me with great drive off the corners, allowing me to progress to ninth. Hopefully, we will be able to show everyone just how competitive this Radar Tires Toyota is during Round 4 tomorrow.”

The ProLite Unlimited race truck was repaired overnight in preparation for LOORRS Round 4 at Las Vegas Motors Speedway on Sunday, April 28. LOORRS ProLite Round 4 qualifying is Sunday at 11:00 am with the race starting at 4:00 pm.

Some of the Radar Tires used this weekend will feature the Breast Cancer Research Foundation pink ribbon logo.  For every Radar tire sold, Omni United will donate $5 to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) with a minimum annual donation of $200,000 and a maximum donation of $250,000.

The two-day event at Las Vegas Motor Speedway features Lucas off-road racing Round 3 Saturday and Round 4 on Sunday.  Radar Tires Racing, Bronson Motorsports and Johnson will compete in both races this weekend.

Off-road motorsports was chosen by the newly-formed Radar Racing team to showcase the Renegade R5 M/T tire, which features open blocks for mud dispersion, deep tread blocks, and reinforced shoulders.  This tread pattern and rigorous construction is ideal for the surfaces encountered on short course tracks such as Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernardino, California and Firebird Raceway in Chandler, Arizona as well as the open desert of Baja California in the legendary SCORE Baja 1000, the most iconic of all off-road races.
