Alumi Craft Racer Luke Johnson Takes Five Straight Wins

Luke JohnsonLuke Johnson has done what few before him have accomplished. In his first season racing his Peak Motor Oil / Red BullUndead Power Alumi Craft Pro Buggy in the Traxxas TORC series he won five straight races. The winning streak puts him in an exclusive club of racers who have dominated on the track. “Since the beginning of the year, the strategy has remained the same,” said Luke, “Be as meticulous in the shop as I can and as smooth as I can on the track. I never thought I would start the season with 5 wins in a class I have never raced before.”

Of course, it wasn’t easy for Luke to maintain such a high level of competitiveness. “Without a doubt, Friday at Bark River had to be the race of my career so far,” says Luke, “Fellow Alumi Craft racer Andy Zipperer got out to an early lead. At the competition yellow, I had made it up to 3rd. I made a move for second place and zeroed in on Andy. I tried everything I could, without banging wheels, to get around him. On the last lap, in the last corner, I saw an opening and went for it. I squeaked that win out by 2 tenths of a second. That was my most gratifying win by far.”

Luke is quick to credit his Alumi Craft racecar and a long list of sponsors who support him. “Alumi Craft is the most dominant chassis builder in the Pro Buggy division,” says Luke, “When I made the decision to enter the Pro Buggy class the choice was obvious. I felt an Alumi Craft with the Chevrolet EcoTech, FOX shocks and BFGoodrich Tires would be the best combination to hunt down a championship. I couldn’t be happier with the car. It makes my job a whole lot easier when you start with a great car.”

Luke JohnsonWith five wins in a row going into round 6 at Crandon, the pressure was on Luke to make it a six pack. Battling with Scott Schwalbe on the white flag lap, the two got tangled causing Luke to do a mid-air 360.  His car shut off and he couldn’t get it to re-fire. The track crew pulled him backward allowing him to get it bump started in reverse. Unfortunately, he had already been lapped. Luke finished 7th, ending his streak.

“I am a firm believer in that if you don’t expect to win every time you are on the track you never will,” says Luke, “I think there are realistic goals you set as you build your race program. Start with finishing the race, then a top ten, then a top five, a podium finish, and then you can expect a win. Your goals should be realistic and your dreams should scare you because you may fail but that’s a risk you have to be willing to take. Moving forward, everything remains the same. I’m going to keep a level head and my eyes on the prize.”

Luke made the right decision when he trusted Alumi Craft Race Cars to fulfill his dream.
