Kawasaki Teryx at the North Pole

Everyone has a Christmas tradition. Mine is to head out with my family to Dumont Dunes in the Mojave Desert of California. We load up a Christmas Tree, plant it in front of the motorhomes and trailers and decorate it with balls and tinsle that will stand up to the sometimes fierce desert winds and burn with the tree on New Years Eve.

This year was no different, yet it kinda was. I threw in a trip to the North Pole. Yes, really, the North Pole. At the far edge of the dunes is a Mail Box that kids and big kids alike can drop their Santa “I want for Christmas” letters. To make it a little more fun, we loaded up the Christmas tree in the bed of the Kawasaki Teryx and headed out. Ever dune with a Christmas tree in the bed? Quite a refreshing smell…I must say…Desert Pine? With a bow on its tail, a Santa Hat as a topper and a Desert Tortoise napping underneath, we made our way over the dunes and across the desert floor to Santa’s Mailbox we went.

A good ride made it even more fun to take pictures once we got there. Nothing like family portraits climbing on a Kawasaki Teryx wih a tree in the back!

A good laugh was had by all when we read some of the letters. Holy Cow! Do kids just want it all! I couldn’t believe the lists that were written out, but then, heck, I was the one that would steal the Chaparral and JC Penny’s Catalog and dog ear the bejesus out of them. Oh, yea, those were the days!

We rode back to camp with a couple hours to go before sunset and we still had to decorate the tree! I backed up the Teryx to exactly the right location and we tested the dump bed…now that was fun! I guess after hauling the tree in a trailer for 10 hours, putting it into the bed of the Teryx for a dune ride, what more damage could we do to it by dumping it onto the ground…a couple times. Now that is $6 of entertainment! Mom hauled out the boxes of decorations and we got to work. A lovely, lovely tree it is!
